3 exercises to help achieve your 2019 goals

Like most people who set New Years resolutions and goals you probably automatically think about ‘what you want to achieve off the top of your head.

It may be one thing, it may be a few things. But whatever they are have a go at these 3 simple exercises to help you pick, prioritise and boost the chances of accomplishing what you want to achieve.

Exercise 1

List your top 20 most important goals you want to achieve in 2019. Make sure all the goals, tasks, projects or whatever it is you want can be measurable and achieved.

Exercise 2

Circle the top 5 most important goals on that list. Whichever of these goals stands out the most to you are your ‘A’ goals and should take up most of your time. Start planning out the best process for achieving these goals. Set specific short, medium and long term targets and plan how you will achieve it and stay committed to them.

Here are a few key recommendations to strengthen your commitment to your aims;

  • Write down your goals (complete)
  • Set a plan of action to achieve them
  • Set milestones (make the first 2 achievable)
  • Anticipate barriers
  • Track your progress so far
  • Track how much you have left
  • Complete and focus more on B list goals


Exercise 3

You have now prioritised 5 goals (your A list) which leaves you 15 ‘B list’ goals. Work on all your list A goals as a priority! When time allows, or you complete all list A, then work on your B list goals. This way your main goals get all the attention and little distraction from elsewhere. Studies have proven its easier and more effective to focus on achieving 5 important goals then 20 unimportant ones. It also reduces the possibility of things going majorly wrong and improves the time on which it will take to complete.

Now before you head off and go for it, you need to make sure that you can make the sacrifice. Make sure that you asses the cost and are willing to pay for it. For example, if you want a flat, toned stomach are you willing to sacrifice the nights out, junk food, social events and the early morning lie ins?

If you are going to have any chance of success you need to face the terrain that lies ahead and be willing to do things you have never done before, even if you don’t enjoy it.
